Tinting

JPJ Tint Rules in Malaysia: The Legal VLT Limits

Short answer. Malaysian rules require the front windscreen to transmit at least 70% of visible light and the front side windows at least 50%. Rear side windows and the rear windscreen have no VLT limit for private vehicles. VLT is measured through glass and film together, not the film alone.

The limits

Front windscreen: minimum 70% VLT. Front side windows: minimum 50% VLT. Rear side windows and rear windscreen: no VLT limit for private vehicles.

These are floors, not targets. Nothing stops you fitting a lighter film than the minimum.

The mistake that catches honest drivers

VLT is measured through the whole window — glass plus film. Factory automotive glass is not perfectly clear; it typically transmits somewhere in the high eighties.

So a film sold as '70%' applied to 85% glass gives you roughly 60% combined. Fit that to a windscreen and you have failed the limit while believing you complied.

This is why the meter reading after installation matters more than the number printed on the film box.

Special approvals

Exemptions exist in limited circumstances, generally on medical or security grounds, and require formal approval rather than a shop's assurance.

If a shop offers to fit illegal film and says enforcement won't notice, remember the summons follows the vehicle, not the installer.

What to keep in the car

Ask your installer to write the measured VLT for each window on the invoice against your plate number. It converts a roadside argument into a document check.

Frequently asked questions

Tinted depan berapa peratus?

The front windscreen must transmit at least 70% of visible light, and front side windows at least 50%.

Can rear windows be fully blacked out?

Rear side windows and the rear windscreen have no VLT limit for private vehicles, so darker film is permitted there.

How is tint measured at a roadblock?

With a VLT meter clamped over the glass, reading glass and film together.

Does factory glass count?

Yes. VLT is always measured through glass and film combined, which is why film VLT and final VLT differ.
