Tinting

Why Tint Turns Purple and Bubbles

Short answer. Purple fade is a dyed-film failure. The dye layer breaks down under UV and loses its blue and green components, leaving purple. Bubbling follows as the adhesive degrades. Neither can be repaired — the film has to be stripped and replaced. Carbon and ceramic films have no dye layer and don't do this.

What's actually happening

Dyed film relies on a coloured layer to absorb light. UV energy breaks the dye molecules down over time, and the blue and green components go first — leaving the purple that stays behind.

Malaysia's UV index sits around 11–12 at midday for much of the year. That's roughly the harshest routine UV exposure a car will encounter anywhere, so film that might last years elsewhere fails here far sooner.

Then the bubbles

The adhesive is next. As it degrades it releases from the glass in patches, and the trapped air shows as bubbles or a hazy silvering.

Once this starts it spreads. There's no product that re-bonds a failed adhesive layer.

Why it can't be fixed

There is no repair. The film is stripped and replaced — and stripping baked-on dyed film is slow, particularly across a rear windscreen where defogger lines are easily damaged.

This is what makes cheap film expensive on the second cycle.

What doesn't fade

Carbon film uses carbon particles rather than dye. Ceramic film uses ceramic particles. Neither has a dye layer to break down, so both hold colour.

Frequently asked questions

Can purple tint be fixed?

No. It has to be stripped and replaced — the dye layer has already broken down.

How long before dyed tint turns purple in Malaysia?

Sooner than in temperate climates because of sustained high UV. It is a question of when rather than whether.

Does ceramic tint fade?

No. Ceramic film has no dye layer, so it holds its colour.

Is bubbling a fitting fault or a film fault?

Bubbles appearing within days of fitting are usually normal curing moisture. Bubbles appearing after years are adhesive failure — a film problem.
